Saumendra Narayan Halder has assumed the charge of Novomine’s Principal Advisor for Soil Conservation and Land Use management.
He is a Civil Engineer from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur, graduated in 1982. He started his career as Asstt. Manager (Civil) with Gannon Dunkerly Co. Pvt. Ltd. at Kolkata for construction of industrial structures at Kolaghat (West Bengal) Thermal Power Project during the years spanning 1982 to 1983.
He then proceeded to join Coal India Limited (CIL) in 1984, where he was posted with CIL’s planning and design subsidiary, Central Mine Planning & Design Institute (CMPDI) at Ranchi. During his tenure at CMPDI, he worked extensively in opencast mine planning, including the Rajmahal OCP of Eastern Coalfields Limited (ECL), which is one of the production subsidiaries of CIL with Canadian experts, from 1984 to 1988 - this was a vital time during his career where he started as a Jr. Executive Trainee and rose to the position of Executive Engineer (Civil).
In 2010, he was promoted to the post of Chief Manager (Civil) in the department of Environmental Management Planning of CMPDI Regional Institute-III at Ranchi in Jharkhand and CMPDI Regional Institute-V at Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh and was associated with the preparation of EIA/EMP reports of CCL (Central Coalfields Limited) & SECL (South Eastern Coalfields Limited) where he prepared nearly 50 EIA/EMP reports of OC/UG Coal Mining projects including Ashoka OCP, Piparwar OCP of CCL & Gevra OCP, Dipka OCP, Kusmunda OCP of SECL, including contract management & site visits for collection and analysis of baseline environmental quality data and air quality modelling studies.
Moreover, he has also worked as the Chief Manager (Civil) to CIL’s Management Representative (MR) to oversee the preparation of Sustainability Reports (as per GRI guidelines); closure & reclamation of mined out areas ; supply of excess treated mine water to the nearby villages (mine water management); Quarterly Progress Reports for submission to such government bodies as the MoEFCC, MoC and other statutory bodies and was also involved with the ISO 14001 & other ISO certifications of mines, offices and other establishments during 2011 to 2019 at CIL’s headquarters in Kolkata.
