About Tapan Kumar Chakravarty

He has worked in several exploration projects of the Maharatna CPSE, i.e., Coal India Limited (CIL) and although he is a geologist by profession, it would not do justice to limit him to it as he has worked extensively in the field of Environment and EIA, and eventually, diversified into a new branch of geology namely, Environmental Geology – where he became the leading executive to get environmental and forest clearances for coal mining projects. He has formulated over 50 EIA-EMP reports for underground and opencast coal mining projects during his 30-year long career at the Central Mine Planning and Design Institute (CMPDI) since 1980 to 2010. His growth as a professional, while at the CMPDI is one that inspires awe and motivates our company’s young workforce to strive for progress and not perfection. Starting out as a novice geologist in the Coal India Limited subsidiary, in the year 1980, he retired as the General Manager of Geology and Environment from the company in 2010. Four years later, he co-founded United Exploration India Pvt Ltd. (UIEPL) - a geological and mining consultancy company based in West Bengal.

Post retirement, he had been associated with assessment of coal properties in Indonesia and Australia as the Head of Coal Exploration and Environment at various exploration sites for BIL Planet (now MSM Mines and Minerals Private Limited) and has implemented various geo-environmental studies and coal exploration projects through land-use mapping and remote sensing in such areas as the Jharia Coalfields, Ib Valley Coalfields, Singrauli Coalfields, and Bokaro Coalfields, among others in India and the UK, Canada, Indonesia, Australia, and Tanzania on a global scale.

He was awarded a Ph.D. degree for his research work in the field of Coal Geology and is certified as a Recognised Qualified Person (RQP) by the Indian Bureau of Mines (IBM).
